Day 6 - July 17th - Northeast Scotland

Elgin - Biblical Garden and Elgin Cathedral

The Elgin Biblical Garden is a beautiful display of flowers and plants accompanied by statuary and biblical quotations.

Elgin Cathedral

Cathedral interior from the crossing between the front towers.

There is a display of stone carvings in one of the towers.

A Mason's Mark left by the medieval mason who worked the stone when the cathedral was being built in the 13th century.

A Wood Pigeon - the call of this bird seems to be legally required to be added to the soundtrack of every British detective show when the detectives are outdoors. I think of them as "Midsomer Murders Birds".

The Chapter House at Elgin Cathedral was used for meetings of the Cathedral elders.

When we were looking at the Chapter House, this musician, Jim Tribble, walked in and proceeded to give us a private concert and lecture on the history of musical instruments. He played about a dozen different medieval instruments and told the Scouts about when each was developed.

He handed some of the instruments around for the Scouts to see how light they are.

A Pictish stone - older than the cathedral within which it stands.

St. Giles Chuch in the center of Elgin.

We had lunch at an Italian restaurant in Elgin - the food was obviously a hit.

The Elgin War Memorial

Museum of Scottish Lighthouses  - Fraserburgh

The Old Kinnaird Head Lighthouse is part of the Museum of Scottish Lighthouses. Our visit to the museum started out with a guided tour of the lighthouse.

The spiral staircase leading up the lighthouse. The weights which powered the light dropped through the center of the staircase. Every few hours the lighthouse keeper would have to climb the stairs to tend the light and wind the weights back up to the top.

The rest of the museum is made up of exhibits on the technology of lighthouses.

Dinner at The Stag pub in Forfar - still life with Irn Bru

Our home for the evening, Douglaswood Scout Centre near Forfar.
